I absolutely loved the students at Our Story center! We worked about 10-15 hours per week teaching, then some extra hours making lesson plans. Every weekday we ate lunch and dinner together with the staff, which was always delicious!! However, on the weekends we did not get meals and were actually locked out of the house from 9am to 10pm every Saturday and Sunday. This was communicated to us last minute, so it was quite unexpected. We also had to be home by 11pm every night during our stay, or else we're locked out. Besides this, it was a good experience & so fun teaching such sweet kids!

Was a good experience. Worked with various groups of students: one with severe the project disabilities, neurotypical children ages 7-12, and adults. You get a schedule for the week on Sunday nights. Loved working with the students. Especially our Friday excursions! The program is very informal and go with the flow. On weekends they expect you to be gone mostly from 9am-10pm. Only workers of the center have keys to the place and if they leave, you need to leave to leave also or get locked in. (Our first week we were notified about this abruptly and had to leave the building on the spot)

This experience was great to be immersed in local life in Hanoi! The host family and employees made me feel so welcomed and at home. I felt really supported when it came to lesson planning and any questions I had.

Hi Katie,
I would like to say thank you so much for your help. That’s great with
the lessons you have taught in our house., we have been impressed by your teaching as you are hard-working, enthusiastic, and friendly. All students still talk about you as a great teacher. You never refused to help whenever we had any difficulties.
Once again, thank you so much for volunteering with us, we have some amazing memories that we will never forget and we always welcome you whenever you return.

I had a lot of fun during this experience. I enjoyed having a lot of responsibility in the classes. It was a challenge for an unexperienced teacher, but a fun one! Ms. Thu is a kind and cool person, and so are the other staff and family members. Us volunteers spent the weekends hanging out with other Vietnamese volunteers and students, which was a great way of experiencing the local culture. The only thing that caused me some discomfort was the difficulty in communication. I stumbled in the first class not knowing I was the main teacher and should have prepared something, which was stressful.

The program director, Ms. Thu, is one of the most kind and beautiful person that I met in my life. The job that she and her stuff is doing over there is amazing. I highly recommend this place. You will learn a lot with everybody and they will be so nice and kind with you. Thank you for everything Old Story Center!!!
