1. Moonbah Hut, near Jindabyne

The well-appointed Moonbah Hut(s) have nailed that rustic cattleman’s-hut vibe, despite the fact they were actually built in 2003.

Think cushy robes, open fires and underfloor heating.

The River Hut, on the banks of the Moonbah River, is the pick of the two huts with its traditional claw-foot bath, wrought-iron beds, 80-year-old wood stove and spacious kitchen.

2. Dreamers, Mount Beauty

Set on two hectares of riverland, yet close to the centre of Mount Beauty, Dreamers feels a million miles away.

The generously apportioned rammed-earth chalets and apartments have been decorated with a designer’s eye, highlighted by the stunning use of recycled timber.

Solar power and kitchen cupboards and wardrobes made from recycled plastic bags underline the eco credentials.

3. The House at Smoko, Bright

This is one seriously smoking High Country statement.

Inspired by a mountain cattleman’s hut and tobacco drying kiln, the House at Smoko sports a dramatic throwback exterior made from rough-and-ready local stone, corrugated iron and timber.

Inside it’s bright, airy with generous windows making you feel at one with the gardens of the 11-hectare property.

The view of Mt Feathertop is a good reason to sit and stare a while.

4. The Buckland, near Bright

Nestled close to Mount Buffalo, splash-out palace The Buckland embodies alpine-style decadence without trying too hard.

Five cabins exude attention to detail; tastily decorated and replete with cosy goose down bedding, free-standing baths, L’Occitane toiletries and High Country views that just don’t quit.

5. EcoCrackenback, near Jindabyne

Tucked away from the lights of Jindabyne off the Alpine Way (roughly a third of the way to Thredbo) is this gaggle of ‘ecologically sensitive habitats’.

The 18 self-contained multi-room cabins of EcoCrackenback have minimalist interiors with ethanol-burning fireplaces, while the outsides blend well with the snow gums that pepper the 16 hectares.
